Motor Neuron Disease (MND), commonly known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerve cells (motor neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements. Over time, these motor neurons degenerate and die, causing the brain to lose its ability to communicate with muscles.
Symptoms:
The disease gradually leads to:
Causes and Risk Factors:
The exact cause of MND/ALS is not fully understood. Most cases are sporadic, while a small percentage are inherited. Factors that may contribute include genetics, age (usually 40–70 years), and possibly environmental triggers.
Progression:
As the disease advances, individuals may lose the ability to walk, speak, or perform daily activities independently. Cognitive functions are generally preserved in most cases, though some may develop changes in thinking or behavior.
Treatment and Management:
There is currently no cure for MND/ALS. Treatment focuses on:
Medications to slow progression and manage symptoms
Physical therapy to maintain mobility and muscle strength
Speech and occupational therapy to aid communication and daily functioning
Respiratory support for breathing difficulties
Early diagnosis and comprehensive care can help improve quality of life, provide symptom relief, and support patients and caregivers through the challenges of the disease.
