Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. It slowly affects memory, thinking, behaviour and the ability to manage daily tasks. Early diagnosis gives families time to plan, and treatment can help symptoms and quality of life.
Common Signs :
Forgetting recent conversations, appointments or events
Repeating questions or stories
Trouble managing money, medicines or familiar tasks
Getting lost in familiar places
Difficulty finding words
Changes in mood, personality or judgment
How we diagnose
Diagnosis starts with a detailed history, usually with a family member present, and a neurological examination. We use memory and thinking tests, blood tests to rule out reversible causes such as vitamin B12 or thyroid problems, and brain imaging (MRI or CT). In selected cases, further tests are advised.
Treatment and support
Medicines that can help memory and thinking symptoms in suitable patients
Treatment of depression, anxiety, sleep problems and agitation
Management of other conditions such as blood pressure, diabetes and hearing loss
Advice on daily routines, safety at home and activity
Guidance and support for caregivers
When to see a neurologist
If memory or thinking changes are affecting daily life, do not wait. Some causes of memory loss are treatable.
